Sunflowers need a lot of sun and water. Especially as a cut flower they are particularly thirsty!
Cut the stems diagonally before placing them in a vase
Remove the excess leaves from the stems
Place the sunflowers in a clean vase with lukewarm tap water
Keep the water clean by changing it daily
Disinfect the water with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice if needed
Pamper your sunflowers with an extra dose of flower food
Find a sunny spot for the sunflower bouquet - by the window, for example - but still make sure that the vase is not in full sunlight
Be sure to keep your sunflowers away from your fruit bowl
When do sunflowers bloom?
The flowering period of sunflowers depends on environmental factors and the time of planting. Usually this is from June to October - or until the first frost. Sunflowers are native to Central and South America and cannot stand the cold.
Nowadays, however, sunflowers are available almost all year round. They are then imported or grown in greenhouses. That is why it is best to order your sunflower bouquet in summer.
